It's hard to imagine life before the internet. You either had to beg your parents for the latest version of Encyclopedia Britannica, physically check out magazines and books at the library, or pick up the phone to call your friend if you wanted to learn about her cool eyeliner trick. But these days, the World Wide Web is literally (and constantly) at your fingertips, along with the plethora of beauty hacks, tricks, and tips that you can get with a single click. And though the internet is a pretty awesome resource, somewhere along the line viral hacks have turned from practical to purely just for entertainment — we're looking at you, glow-in-the-dark Harry Potter tattoo.
That's where we step in: Below, we've rounded up some of the weirdest hacks that truly work — including a neat way you can turn a packet of Kool-Aid into your prettiest lip color, the best homemade blemish treatment, an easy method to keep your mascara from drying out, and more!
Make a Kool-Aid Lip Stain
Save a little Kool-Aid from your next summer barbecue to create this punchy pop of lip color. Simply wet your lips, press your finger into the powder and gently rub it onto your mouth, like you would a lip balm. Then use a Q-tip to smooth out any clumps. The Cherry flavor gets you the most amazing classic red, while Pink Lemonade looks like a hot pink.
Turn Your Pencil Eyeliner Into a Gel
There's nothing as irritating for your sensitive eye area as stabbing it with a pencil eyeliner that's as hard as the yellow No. 2 you use in school. In a pinch, use a candle flame or a lighter to carefully heat up your pencil liner for a few seconds to turn it into a soft and creamy texture like a gel. Gently test it on the back of your hand first to make sure it's not too hot.
Get Fuller Lashes With a Coat of Powder
Use a clean mascara spoolie to dust on a sheer coat of translucent powder in between coats of mascara to plump and volumize your lashes. It gives the formula something to grip to without weighing down your lash hairs with too many coats. Bonus: It works on brows, too.
Blot Your T-Zone With a Toilet Seat Cover
The same thin, absorbent paper that you use on public toilet seats actually work wonders at blotting away an oily T-zone. They're more gentle than using a paper towel and won't smear away your makeup the way a facial tissue does. Just tear off a clean piece, blot, and go.
Revive Dried Out Gel Liner With a Drop of Face Oil
Take a cue from one of our fave DIY bloggers, Farah, and use a drop of your favorite face oil to help turn a flaky gel pot liner back into a silky formula. Use an eyeliner brush to mix it around in the pot before applying to your lids.
Dab on Orange Lipstick to Cover Under Eye Circles
This little hack is just a matter of color wheel basics. Orange cancels out the blue and green shadows that appear under your eyes, making them less visible when you apply concealer over top. Choose a matte formula and play around with the amount of lipstick you use — and be super careful about not getting it in your eyes.
Create a Crushed Aspirin Blemish Treatment
Crack an aspirin with the back of a spoon and use a drop or two of distilled water to make it into a paste. Apply it to your pimple for 5 minutes to help instantly reduce redness and inflammation.
Draw an X on Your Lips to Make Them Appear Fuller
By using the tip of your lipstick or a matching lip liner to first create an "X" in the middle of your top lip, it'll help you define your Cupid's bow, give the appearance of fuller lips, and make a crisper, cleaner lipstick look.
Avoid Dried-Out Mascara With Eye Drops
Resuscitate your favorite tube of mascara by using one or two droplets of eye drops to make the formula less dry and clumpy. Gently use the wand to swoosh it around the tube, and remember never to pump your mascara in and out as the trapped air dries out the formula faster.
Use a Piece of Tape to Figure Out Where to Contour
Place a piece of masking tape (don't put too much pressure) that connects the distance between your ear and mouth on each side. Dot along the top of the tape with highlight or bronzer to help you create a perfectly symmetrical contour. Remove the tape before blending the bronzer with your fingers or a brush.
